Art Birds

Some budgies are the latest to take the tourist trail in Belfast and are camped on Donegall Street in Belfast.

Not in the Premier Inn, but in their own exclusive caravan site across the street.

The PS2 Gallery is proving yet again that art is for everyone and can be enjoyed by everyone.

The windows frame a whimsical example of this in an exhibition called “Budgie Butlins”.

I walked past this the other day and had to stop to look in at the kitsch 50’s inspired land of miniature caravans, sprawling hills and real live budgies perched around the tiny campsite.

The artist Catherine Roberts has an interest in birds and bird houses and experimented with urban, human objects and animals to create this bizarre yet lovely work.

The surreal and charming environment created in this piece of art is something anyone can warm to. It’s cute, it’s strange, and most importantly accessible.

Budgie Butlins shows how art can just be to make people happy, to make people stop and wonder and bring a smile to their face. Which is definitely my favourite kind of art.

The gallery has hosted many exhibitions which all make use of its shop-front style  to frame surrealist realms that stop people in their tracks, ranging from dream-like drawings on the walls to a make-shift job centre highlighting the seedy opportunists taking advantage of desperate job seekers.

The current exhibition runs to Friday 25 September, try and catch feeding time!
